How long …? questions



1. How long…?  is used to ask about length of periods of time.

Examples:
How long have you been living in this house?
How long have you been waiting?

2. How long…? is used to ask about the measured length of something.

Examples:
How long was your wedding dress?
How long is your hair?

3. How long …? is used to ask about the duration of time required to do something.

Example:
How long does it take to drive from Lisbon to Madrid?


How many times …? questions


How many times …? is used to ask about the number of occasions something has happened.

Examples:
How many times have you watched this movie?
How many times did you visit your grandparents this summer?
How many times have I told you to buy some milk?!


How often …? questions


How often …? is used to ask about how frequently something happens.

Examples:
How often do you play tennis?
How often do you go to the cinema/theatre with your family?
How often do you go to the grocery to do shopping?

Note:
How many times…? usually refers to past occasions, while How often …? may refer to past, present or future situations.


How far …? questions


How far …? is used to ask about the distance to a place.

Example:
How far is the North pole from the South pole?


How fast …? questions


How fast …? is used in speed related questions.

Examples:
How fast can you ride a bicycle?
How fast you can come home?

Expressing quantity: How much …? or How many …?

When we are asking about quantity or amount of something, we start questions with “How many” or “How much”.


How many …? (Quantity)

"How many …?" is used with countable nouns.

Countable nouns: they could be counted, and they are singular or plural: friend, girl, dog, candy,

Examples:

How many friends do you have?

How many candies do you want?

How many cousins do you have?

How many books did you read this weekend?


How much …? (Quantity)

"How much...?" is used with uncountable nouns.

Uncountable nouns: they could NOT be counted, they are only singular and could not be plural: money, water, sugar, oil, milk, sand, soap, etc.

Examples:

How much money do you have?

How much juice can you drink?

How much time do you have?

How much sugar would you like in your coffee?

How much milk did you buy?


How much …? (Price or Weight)

"How much …?" is also used when asking about price or weight. 

In this case we can use it with countable nouns. (singular or plural)


Examples:

How much does it cost?

How much do those socks cost? How much are those socks?

How much did that skirt cost? How much is that skirt?


How much do you weight?

How much does this bag weight?

How much does your suitcase weight?

How much does the banana bunch weight?
