Expressing quantity: How much …? or How many …?
When we are asking about quantity or amount of
something, we start questions with “How many” or “How much”.
How many …? (Quantity)
"How many …?" is used with
countable nouns.
Countable nouns: they
could be counted, and they are singular or plural: friend, girl, dog, candy,
Examples:
How many friends do you
have?
How many candies do you
want?
How many cousins do you
have?
How many books did you
read this weekend?
How much …? (Quantity)
"How much...?" is used with
uncountable nouns.
Uncountable nouns: they
could NOT be counted, they are only singular and could not be plural: money, water,
sugar, oil, milk, sand, soap, etc.
Examples:
How much money do you
have?
How much juice can you drink?
How much time do you have?
How much sugar would you
like in your coffee?
How much milk did you buy?
How much …? (Price or
Weight)
"How much …?" is also used when
asking about price or weight.
In this case we can use it with countable nouns.
(singular or plural)
Examples:
How much does it cost?
How much do those socks
cost? How much are those socks?
How much did that skirt
cost? How much is that skirt?
How much do you weight?
How much does this bag weight?
How much does your
suitcase weight?
How much does the banana
bunch weight?
