Prepositions of place and direction

A preposition is a part of the speech that usually comes before a noun or pronoun and connects it with another part of the sentence.

A preposition of place is a preposition which is used to refer to a place where something or someone is located.

A preposition of direction is a preposition which is used to show movement from one place to another.

Let’s see the meaning and examples of some prepositions of place and direction:

at or to a higher place of something; or more than something
There is a mirror above the sink.

to point out the specific time or place where and when something happens

toward a higher level
Take the stairs up to the attic.
down
toward a lower level
Take the stairs down to the hall.
along
in line that follows the side of something
There is a path along the river.
across
movement from one end to or towards the other end of something

opposite
on the other side of something and usually facing it
On the opposite side of the market is the bank.
against
opposite of something; on the side of something and touching it
The bank is against the market.
toward(s)
getting closer or going into the direction of something
My father’s car is on the driveway and is just going towards the garage.
from … to …
starting at specific point and ending at another
My grandparents are coming from Europe to the US for Christmas.
past
on or to the other side of something; passing beyond something
If you drive past the church, you should see the bank on your right.
around
movement in circle; surrounding something
I went on a run around the park.
through
passing from one end or side of something to the other
Look through the window to see our garden.
