SHOULD



Modal verb SHOULD


1.    Use SHOULD to give advice, a recommendation or a suggestion

You should study for the test, so that you don’t fail.
The new restaurant is amazing, you should go.
My hairstyle is boring, I should get a new haircut.

2.  Use SHOULD to express expectation for the present, past or future

Our parents should be home by now. Let’s call them.
They should win this championship, they played very well.
I should be fine tomorrow.
You should not have any problems.

3.  Use SHOULD to express obligation
(SHOULD for obligation is not so strong as MUST)

You should be in school by 8 a.m.
You should pay attention in class.
We should check in 2 hours before departure time.

4.  Use SHOULD to express an expectation for something in the past that didn’t happen (should + have + past participle)
When the subject didn’t fulfill their obligation in the past or didn’t act responsibly

I should have studied harder for this test.

5.  Use SHOULD to express not fulfilling the obligation (should + be + verb + ing)
When the subject is not fulfilling their obligation or is not acting sensibly.

You should be wearing your seatbelt. (The person isn't wearing one right now)



Shouldn't

We use shouldn't to advise not to do something, usually because it is bad or wrong to do.

You shouldn't lie to your doctor.
We shouldn't leave without saying goodbye.
You shouldn't talk like that to your mother.
