Modal verb WILL
We normally use WILL to
speak about the future. It is always combined with another verb.
Since WILL is classified
as a modal verb it has the same characteristics:
◈ It does not change in
form. You can't add "s", "ed", "ing"...
◈ It is always followed by
another verb in the base form (= without "to" = the bare infinitive)
◈ It is used to express
modality like - certainty, possibility, willingness, obligation, necessity,
ability, etc.
◈ don’t use it to form
“Do” questions/negatives
Contractions with WILL
It is possible to use
contractions in both positive and negative sentences.
With positive contractions
WILL becomes 'LL and is joined to the subject:
I’ll/ you’ll/ he’ll/ she’ll/ it’ll/ we’ll/ you’ll/ they’ll
Whit negative contractions
will not= won’t
I / you/ he/ she/ it/we/
you/ they won’t
Questions with WILL/WON’T
To make a question with WILL/WON’T
we reverse the order of the subject and WILL/WON’T:
Will he come to the party?
Yes, he will. No, he won’t.
Will she take yoga
classes? Yes, she
will. No, she won’t.
Uses of Will:
1. Use WILL when
make spontaneous decisions at the moment of speaking
It’s cute. I will buy it.
I will have Caesar salad, please.
2. Use WILL
for polite invitation or request in questions
Will you marry me?
Will you pass the salt, please?
3. Use WILL
to make an offer, a promise or a threat
I will do the dishes and my brother will throw away
the garbage.
I will keep your secret.
If you don’t stay silent in the movie, we will go
home.
4. Use WILL
to express prediction or guessing about the future
This can be based on personal judgement or opinion.
He will make a mess for a minute.
I think it will rain later so take an umbrella with
you.
In think you will like this book.
This will be my mother calling.
5. Use WILL
to express a predictable behavior, action or condition
My dog will fall asleep as soon as we get back home
after a long walk.
WON’T
The negative form is
formed by adding NOT to WILL.
WILL + NOT = WON’T
1. Use WON’T
when someone refuses to do something
I told his to clean the
kitchen, but he won’t do it.
My father won’t give me
pocket money if I won’t mow the lawn.
