Day and night
There are exactly
24 hours in one day.
The day is
divided into two cycles - daytime and night-time. Daytime is the time from
sunrise to sunset, while night-time is from sunset to sunrise. The sunrise and
sunset times usually vary, but we could say that first cycle – daytime, is
approximately from 6 am to 6 pm., while the second cycle – night-time, is from
6pm to 6 am.
Remark:
a.m. comes from the Latin words 'ante meridiem' and means
before midday (=before noon).
p.m. comes from the Latin words 'post meridiem' and means
past midday
Every day
starts at midnight. We say that the time is a.m. just after midnight. This
covers the hours from 12a.m. to 11.59a.m. Then we reach noon and could say that
it is p.m. just after midday. This covers the hours from 12p.m. to 11.59p.m.
The diagram above shows the two cycles of one 24-hour-day and the words
that we use to say the time.
