Dining room vocabulary
The dining room is a room in a house or an apartment
where family and friends gather to eat. Nowadays, the dining room is often
connected to the kitchen to make serving easier or it could be combined with
the living room to ease socializing during gatherings.
A dining room always contains a dining table and chairs, along with some other furniture and tableware, let’s see them:
dining room set –includes dining table and chairs.
tablecloth – a large piece of
fabric (cloth) that covers the table; used for decoration and to protect the
table’s surface.
placemat – it is the piece of material you put on the
table under your plates and cutlery, sometimes to protect
the tablecloth that covers the table.
coaster - for putting under your glass, cup, or mug, to protect
the table surface from heat damage or residue.
bowl – a container in the
shape of a half-sphere that holds creamy, crumbly or liquid foods.
soup bowl - A soup bowl is
sometimes deeper than a cereal bowl.
cereal bowl – People use it to
serve cereal with milk in it.
salad bowl – bigger than normal
bowl; holds salads in big quantities.
plate – a flat circular or
rectangular surface that holds your food.
side dish plate - a small plate, sometimes
used for dessert.
cutlery – other word for spoons, forks, and knives.
spoon – used to eat soup,
stir drinks and eat certain desserts.
fork – used to pick up
food and put it in your mouth; has spikes that help you pick up pieces of food.
knife – use it to cut the
food. A butter knife is a knife that doesn't have a serrated edge, while a
steak knife is sharper, and does have teeth (a serrated edge).
breadbasket – serve the pieces
of bread on it.
napkin/serviette - Usually at the
table there is a little piece of paper or cloth called a napkin or serviette. You
can wipe your mouth (or your fingers) with it after you eat. Some people put it
in their lap or on their shirt to protect their clothes.
salt and pepper
shaker – containers for keeping a small amount of salt and pepper on the table in
case somebody wants to flavor their meal.
olive oil and vinegar
bottle set - containers for keeping a small amount of olive oil and vinegar on the
table when somebody wants to flavor their meal.
cup - it is what you
drink tea or coffee out of.
saucer - it is the little
plate that goes with your tea
cup.
mug - it is a bigger and
heavier cup.
coffee pot – used to serve
coffee.
tea pot - it is a pot,
usually made of metal, that you use to brew the tea in.
coffee machine – electrical machine
for preparation of coffee.
teaspoon - little spoon for
putting sugar in your coffee or tea and stirring it.
cake stand - For afternoon tea,
you might have a cake or other treats on a cake stand, which is a raised flat
plate that you put the cake on.
sugar bowl – stores sugar
creamer – use it to pour
milk or cream into coffee or tea.
wineglass – it is used to
serve and drink wine only.
champagne flute – it is taller and thinner than a
wineglass and it’s used for
champagne.
glass – used for juice,
water or soda
jug/pitcher of juice – it holds more
liquid than a glass. Some families have a large jug or a pitcher of juice on
the table with the morning breakfast.
serving cart – it is a little cart with wheels that is used to bring your food to the table (most often
seen in fancy restaurants).
serving platter – flat surface that
can hold several plates at a time; servers and waiters/waitresses use this to
bring you your food and drinks
chinaware – it as a name for
porcelain tableware (coffee, tea or dining plates set).
china cabinet – where we usually
keep the chinaware.
buffet - where we might keep the other cups and plates.
