Bathroom vocabulary
The bathroom is a room in the house where people take care of their hygiene. It’s possible to have many objects in a bathroom, but the most important ones are the sink, the shower and the toilet.
Let’s see some of the items you’ll find in a bathroom in a person’s home.
shower - it’s a closed space
where a person can stand under a spray of water to get clean. The water comes
out of a shower head which is situated on the wall above your head.
bathtub - a container filled with water where person could sit in to take a bath.
shower curtain – it’s a curtain made from waterproof material
that is used so that the water doesn’t splash onto the bathroom floor. The
shower curtain usually has curtain rings which are then held in place by
a curtain rod.
rubber mat – it’s a mat placed on the floor in front of
the shower so that you don’t accidentally slip when your feet are wet.
shower cap – it’s a cap made from plastic that you put on your
head when you don’t want to get your hair wet.
soap – to clean dirt off their bodies, people
use soap. They place it in a soap dish. A substitute of soap is shower gel/body
wash which is a liquid that foams up and it’s kept in a plastic bottle.
conditioner – creamier than shampoo, used to make
our hair softer and easier to comb.
comb - a flat piece made of plastic or metal with teeth to help detangle hair
hair brush (brush) - tool that has
bristles and is used to detangle hair
hair dryer – an electrical appliance which
blows hot hair at your hair to make it dry.
towel – a piece of fabric, usually made
of cotton, for drying the body. It’s normally hung on the towel rail.
toilet - a large bowl that you sit on that
collects bodily waste which is flushed away through a pipe with water.
toilet paper - thin sheets of paper that is used
to wipe the body after using the toilet.
plunger – when we finish using the toilet, we
must flush it. If whatever is in the toilet doesn't disappear, we might have to
use a plunger to help us push it down the drain.
toilet brush – it’s a brush used to clean the
inside of the toilet.
toilet seat - seat of wood or plastic hinged to
the top of a toilet.
air freshener - If the toilet smells bad after
someone has used it, you might want to use air freshener so that it smells nice
again.
sink/washbasin/hand
basin – after using
the toilet we must wash our hands, so we use the sink. This is a wide bowl that
has a faucet and a drain to let the water out. It is usually attached to the
wall.
faucet - it’s a device that controls the
flow of water from a pipe.
drain – a hole in the bottom of a sink
used to drain out the water
hand towel – towel used to dry our hands
mirror – a piece of reflective glass that we
use to see our reflection
medicine cabinet – a place to keep your medicine. It’s
called also medicine chest. Its door could actually be a mirror, so this gives us
convenience of having a mirror and a medicine cabinet together.
toothpaste – it’s a creamy substance that's
used to clean the teeth.
toothbrush – it’s a plastic object with a
handle and bristles that is used to clean the teeth after having a meal.
razor – an
instrument with a sharp blade that is used to remove unwanted hair from the face or
body.
Men often have hair that grows on their
face. If there is a lot of hair, it is called a beard. BUT if a man
doesn't want a beard he uses a razor to remove
it.
laundry basket /hamper – basket where we leave our
dirty clothes for washing.
scale – an instrument for weighting. When we want to check our weight, we use
a scale.
