Garden vocabulary
The area behind your house that is covered with grass
or other plants, is a garden. To keep their garden looking good, people usually
have to pull weeds and plant seedlings.
There are names for every tool or equipment used in
gardening, so let’s take a look at some of them:
store house/shed – it’s a small building in the yard/garden where people
usually keep tools or gardening equipment.
faucet – a device that is used to control the flow of water
from a pipe.
garden hose – a long cord used for watering a garden.
wheelbarrow – it’s a garden cart, which people use to move dirt,
compost, piles of leaves, etc.
lawn mower – it’s a machine for cutting grass
watering can – it’s a container that is used to pour water on
plants.
rake – it’s a long-handled instrument with long teeth for
gathering leaves into a pile or smoothing soil for planting.
fork – it’s a tool that has four sturdy teeth and is used
for loosening hard dirt and lifting soil
hand trowel – it’s a small tool we use for digging
digging shovel – used to dig holes or transport dirt from a
wheelbarrow to your garden
pruning shears – used to cut or trim small branches; can be used for
harvesting herbs, fruits or vegetables.
boots – shoes that are designed to protect your feet from
injury, water and mud.
gardening gloves – they protect your hands from getting dirty and from
injuries such as scratches, scrapes or splinters. Wearing gloves also helps avoid
rashes and allergic reactions to plants or other chemicals.
bucket – a cylindrical metal or plastic container with a
handle that is used to hold and carry liquids or other material.
compost – decayed organic material used as a plant fertilizer
seeds - a plant's unit of reproduction, capable of
developing into another plant.
fence – it’s typically a wooden structure that surrounds an area
of ground to mark a boundary or control access
grass – a short, green plant with long, narrow leaves
flower bed – an area where plants are grown
vegetable garden – also known as a vegetable patch or vegetable plot;
it’s a plot of ground where vegetables and other plants are grown for human
consumption.
