Living room



Living room vocabulary

A living room is a room in a house or an apartment, where family members gather to relax or spend time together.
Sometimes the living room is called a lounge room (British English). There are many pieces of furniture and objects in a living room, such as:

sofa/couch – a piece of furniture that a few people can comfortably sit on together. Couch is another name for sofa.

loveseat - a piece of furniture that is smaller than a couch and larger than an armchair, just big enough for two people to sit on.

cushions/ pillowspillows are the rectangular cloth bags filled with feathers or cotton that we rest our back or head on while cushions are bigger and firmer pillows like the comfortable padding that is attached to the frame of a couch

armchair - an armchair is a mix between a couch and a chair that is large and comfortable but only designed for 1 person to sit on. It normally has large padded cushions.

wing chair – an armchair with solid high back and large side pieces on both sides.

coffee table - a large low table in front of the sofa where books and pictures could be placed. Another option is to place a small potted plant or vase of flowers on your coffee table, but not so large that you can't see over it to watch television or talk to another person.

side table - a side table is normally much higher than coffee table, so that people sitting on the sofa (for two or more people) or armchair (for one person) can easily place a glass or other object on it. It is always next to the seat or placed in between two seats. A side table is also a good location to place a lamp.

writing table - a table, which is similar to a desk, but is often smaller.

desktable for writing and reading, often with drawers.

bookcase/ bookshelf - a place where you could put your books or display other things that are important to you. Often people place photos or pictures on bookshelves.

TV stand – a piece of furniture that supports TV’s, DVD players and CD’s.

remote control - a device that can be used to control a TV.

tea/ coffee set – cups and kettle used for drinking and serving tea/coffee

vase of flowers – beautiful ceramic or glass container that is used to hold flowers, it’s usually placed on a side table.

plant – a pot holding a flower.

wall – a vertical side of a room; people often paint it and decorate it with pictures, clocks, etc.

clock – tool that says the time, it’s usually hung on the wall or put on the side table.

photos, pictures - the words photos and pictures can be used interchangeably, but a picture also has the potential to be a painting, where as a photo does not. Photos are often placed inside of picture frames that can either hang on a wall or put on a shelf.

carpet – a piece of material/fabric that covers the floor; used for decoration and isolation.

rug - a piece of material/fabric that covers a small area on the floor; used to decorate and create a warmer feeling.

table lamp/ floor lamp – small lamp put on the table or tall lamp sitting on the floor; has a lampshade.

lampshade – a plastic cone-shaped screen that helps direct the light downward to help you see well.

window – an opening in a wall that holds a sheet of glass; allows you to see outside

curtains/ drapes – long pieces of fabric that cover a window; used for privacy, to block out light, and for decoration

shades/ blinds – shade means blocking the sun, so shades are a string of hard plastic strips that are put on the windows to block out sunlight.

fan a machine with arms that spin to create a current of cool air

fireplace – a designated area in a room where the fire is lit; it prevents it from spreading and directs the smoke up the chimney and not into the room.
