Kitchen vocabulary
A kitchen is a room or a special area in the house used for cooking and food preparation. There are
many different types of kitchen appliances (toaster,
refrigerator, freezer, blender, food
processor, etc.) and kitchen utensils ( pot, pan, kettle, oven mitts, rolling pin, grater, ladle, peeler, etc. ) that are used in the
kitchen. Let’s see some
of them:
dishwasher – a machine used to clean the dirty
dishes using dishwashing liquid and hot water.
sink – special place where we clean the
dirty dishes by hand with dishwashing soap and a dish cloth or sponge.
dish rack – after the dishes have been
washed, we place them in the dish rack, so the water drains off them. Some
people prefer to use a small towel to dry the dishes after they have been
washed and put them into the cabinet/cupboard.
pot rack – the place where we can hang our
pots and pans.
spice rack – the place where keep small jars filled
with cumin, curry powder, dried red pepper and other spices to use them when we
cook.
spatula – it’s often a big wooden or rubber
spoon used to stir sauce while it’s heating in the pot.
saucepan – it’s another word for pot, we usually
use it when we are making sauces or boiling something.
frying pan – pan used for frying eggs or
pancakes.
toaster – a machine used for toasting
bread.
roasting pan – a large deep pan used to cook big
quantities of meat such as turkey, chicken or rabbit in the oven.
refrigerator – it keeps our food products cool,
so they last longer.
freezer – make our products freeze.
cupboard – food that doesn’t need
refrigeration can be stored in the cupboard at room temperature.
chopping board – board made from wood or plastic where
we cut meat, vegetables or other things so we don’t damage the tabletop.
garbage/ trash
bin – where we throw
away the trash.
coffee maker – a machine/device used to make
coffee using ground coffee beans.
coffee machine – a machine used to make coffee using
ground or whole beans.
teaspoon – a small spoon used to stir a drink
or mix in other ingredients.
kettle – it’s a type of pot, mostly for
boiling water, with a lid, spout, and handle.
electric jug – it’s a special jug that uses electricity to
boil water very quickly.
microwave/ microwave
oven – it’s a machine
which heats food or drinks quickly.
stove – we use it for cooking food in pans
and pots. It can either use electricity or gas, creating a flame.
cookbook – it’s a book that contains recipes.
food processor – it’s a machine that cuts food
into small pieces very quickly.
blender – it’s a machine that makes fruit
smoothies.
spoons and
measuring cups -
they help us measure dried or liquid ingredients (like flour,
sugar, milk, oil, salt, pepper, etc.) when we cook something
and need precise quantities.
cake tin/pan – it’s a special pan to bake cakes
in
baking tray (a
sheet pan) - it is a
flat, rectangular metal pan used in an oven. We often use it when bake cookies
or pizza.
oven gloves/oven
mitt – thick gloves
that we use to protect our hands when grabbing something hot.
apron – a garment of cloth that we usually
wear tied around the waist to protect clothing while cooking.
sieve - a utensil used for straining
solids from liquids, when we drain the water from the pasta for example.
garlic press – a tool that helps us grate/shred garlic
instead of chopping it with a knife.
rolling pin – we use it to flatten the dough when
making a thin pizza crust or cookies.
wok – it’s a bowl-shaped frying pan typically
used in Chinese cooking.
chopsticks – two long thin pieces of wood used
for eating Asian food.
can opener - a device that is used to open
cans of food. Be careful when you use it, because it leaves sharp edges and you
can cut your hand on the rim of the can.
ladle – it’s a big deep spoon used to pour
soup into a bowl.
peeler – it’s a tool used to take the skin
off or peel off a fruit or vegetable.
