House vocabulary




House vocabulary

A house is a building where someone lives. There are different types of houses and homes – detached house, semi-detached house, terraced house, apartment (UK- flat), but they all have similar rooms and objects inside and outside, so let’s take a look at the most important ones:

Parts of the house:

roof - is the top covering of a building; it provides protection against rain, snow, sunlight, temperature extremes, and wind.

chimney - a vertical pipe that conducts smoke up from a fireplace through the roof of a building.

satellite dish - a bowl-shaped antenna with which signals are transmitted to or received from a communications satellite.

wall – a vertical side of a house

window - an opening in a wall that holds a sheet of glass; allows you to see outside

basement (cellar) - it is a floor in building that is completely or partially below the ground surface

balcony – a platform outside a building; like a small open room

front door – the main entrance to a house

burglar alarm - an electronic device that makes a loud noise or other alert when someone attempts to break into a building.

stairs - steps leading from one floor of a building to another, typically inside the building and often covered with carpet. Steps are usually outside a building or inside a public building, they are stone or wooden.

fence - it’s typically a wooden structure that surrounds an area of ground to mark a boundary or control access

mailbox - a private box where mail is put when it is delivered



Rooms and places in the house:



Living room – the main room in a house where people relax, watch television, gather with family members and friends.

Bathroom – a room for personal hygiene, where there is a bath or shower, a sink, and a toilet.

Kitchen – a room for preparing food

Bedroom – a room where people sleep and relax

Garden – the area of land next to a house, where there are flowers, grass, and other plants, and often a place for people to sit and have a barbeque

Study room/office – a place for reading, writing, studying or working

Garage – a building for keeping a car in, usually next to or attached to a house
